Summary
This session introduced a life-centric model for nurturing human networks. Moving away from the mechanical, engineering mindset of their original 2017 “Community Canvas” framework, the presenters shared an upcoming open-source project about re-weaving healthy relationships. The Project explored five fundamental elements i) the fire, ii) the web, iii) the rhythm, iv) the circles, and v) the spiral, and used organic metaphors to replace rigid structural rules.
Somatic alignment, group belonging, and natural seasonality were all discussed and participants were invited to share their practices for an upcoming field handbook.
Key Learning Points
- The Blueprint Limitation: Traditional engineering models and “blueprint” canvas boxes are helpful for beginners but fail to capture the fluid, evolutionary reality of living communities
- The Definition of Community: A true community functions specifically as a web of mutuality, reciprocity, and mutual care built deliberately around a shared possibility
- The Central Fire Principle: Every group requires a central, core essence or energetic “fire” that must be carefully stoked and protected to sustain collective resonance
- The Power of the Heartbeat: Healthy, long-term human groups rely heavily on a regular rhythm or “heartbeat” to generate structural stability and relational trust
- The Coexistence of Three Circles: Relational networks naturally sort into three distinct layers: an inner core of stewards, an active ring of engaged members, and a peripheral circle of loose friends
- The Clarity Threshold Conflict: The vast majority of organizational friction occurs when entry thresholds, power dynamics, and financial transparency between concentric circles remain unnamed or ambiguous
- The Mystery of the Spiral: The spiral element represents the continuous somatic flow, onboarding rituals, and conscious transitions of people entering and leaving an changing network.
Action Points
- Map Network Triangles: Actively use directory tools to locate community members who have highlighted what they need, explicitly connecting them to close open network triangles
- Decentralize Relational Fires: Build a resilient, healthy system ecosystem by consciously nurturing a multiplicity of smaller, localized sub-communities rather than relying on one central hub
- Incorporate Somatic Rhythms: Move beyond purely intellectual interactions by introducing non-verbal, physical rituals like dance, shared meals, or song to manifest deep group attunement
- Designate Rest Seasons: Intentionally inject periods of silence, pause, and deliberate “non-doing” into team agendas to respect natural human regeneration cycles
- Establish Clear Role Thresholds: Define clear, explicit guidelines stating what it means to transition between a casual friend, an active member, and a core back-stage fire-keeper
- Honor the Exit Spiral: Turn member exits into conscious, appreciative conversations that explicitly thank individuals for the unique gifts they contributed during their tenure.
- Contribute to Open Handbooking: Document tactical local stories, failure pitfalls, and system metrics directly into the global open-source registry at communityweaving.org
