Metamorphosis and Transformation

With Sebastian Jung, 6 July 2023

Summary

This session looked into metamorphosis as a lens for deep individual, systemic, and organizational transformation. The natural change phases of caterpillar, cocoon, and butterfly were used as blueprints for navigating disruptive crises and liminality. Talking in pairs, the group discussed personal turning points and transformative images. The session included an embodiment exercise: Stepping across physical paper markers representing the current self, the transformational cocoon, and the fully realized “imago” self. In concluding, the group recognized resistance, pain, and the creative possibilities inherent in letting old forms dissolve to allow collective potential to emerge.

Key Learning Points

  • Metamorphosis models radical structural change
  • Liminality marks the space between forms
  • Egoic structures resist deep system changes
  • Dissolution requires a secure psychological container
  • Rigid structures kill emerging creative potential
  • Transformative images guide internal turning points
  • Societal change mimics collective butterfly migrations

Key Action Points

  • Reflect on personal transformative images
  • Test the paper embodiment exercise
  • Share transformation stories
  • Prepare a real-world difficult conversation
