Summary

This session looked at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and system weaving practices. Framed around the critical need for technical inclusion, Alex White examines how AI systems break conventional technological molds through hyper-scalability, autonomous objective execution, and “black box” computational obscurity. By actively evaluating indigenous-led AI programs alongside systemic risks to digital equity, participants mapped the deep value tensions inherent to digital data governance. The session highlighted how change-makers must actively intervene upstream in code creation to ensure modern AI behaves like collaborative, equitable “zebras” rather than monopolistic “unicorns”

  • Practice the Three Stewardship Commitments: Establish ongoing group habits centered on advancing technological understanding, deliberately evaluating community value conflicts, and validating daily ethical behaviors 
  • Study Indigenous-Led Blueprints: Integrate technical designs from pioneering place-based frameworks such as Abundant Intelligences (indigenous knowledge systems), Pole Arctic (satellite climate patterns), or Drumbeat AI (rural health triaging) 
  • Enforce Data Sovereignty Logs: Require personal data loggers that keep vulnerable user cohorts in total control of their metrics, blocking social platforms from exploiting aggregate metadata 
  • Deploy Narrow Safeguard Algorithms: Use sophisticated massive data analysis to flag critical humanitarian crises, such as online bullying or adolescent mental health red flags, through bounded, non-profit consortiums 
  • Cultivate “Zebras” Over “Unicorns”: Structure technological startups to achieve long-term social utility and sustainable financial models rather than pursuing hyper-extractive market dominance 
  • Map Cross-Platform Interoperability: Work toward building open, decentralized software bridges to make separate community social maps fully interoperable
